| 1 | The Buddha with his Disciples | Sculpture | Myanmar (Burma) | 18th century (?) | Bronze, residues of gilding | Height 20.5 cm | Purchase, private individual, 1983 | 15563 | The central figure is the seated Buddha at the moment of awakening, bodhi. His right hand is in the gesture of touching the earth, bhumisparsha-mudra, his left hand rests in his lap. The protuberance on the crown of his head, the ushnisha, tapers to a ketumala finial in the shape of a lotus bud, and he is clothed in a monk’s robe. Attached along the flanks of the pedestal are two small kneeling figures with their hands clasped in the gesture of showing respect, the anjali-mudra, and are probably the Buddha’s closest disciples Sariputta and Moggallana. The pedestal is narrowed in the centre, with a band of lotus petals in the lower frontal section. In a low relief on the rear side of the pedestal is a crocodile with a figure standing on its back or behind it, holding a spherical vessel (?) in its right hand and an elongated object in its left. This may be a figure from the original Myanmar pantheon, for example one of the spirits of nature. | ![]() |

| 2 | Sariputta | Sculpture | Myanmar (Burma) | Early 20th century | Wood, lacquer, gilding, mirror glass | Height 21 cm | Purchase, Joe Hloucha, 1943 | 16150 | Sariputta (Pali, in Sanskrit Shariputra), one of the Buddha’s chief disciples, was reputed to excel in wisdom. He frequently accompanies images and statues of the Buddha together with the figure of another pupil, Moggallana. Here Sariputta is seated on the ground with his hands resting on his legs – he does not display any gesture, which is commonplace for his seated figures. He has the shaven head of a monk. His monk’s robe with decorative hems inlaid with mirror glass is typical of the sculptural style of the Mandalay period (1853–1948). | ![]() |
